Withdrawal & Refund
Students are responsible for study abroad tuition and program fees once they have committed to attending a program. At the time of commitment, students will be subject to the withdrawal, cancellation, and refund policy found here: Withdrawal, Cancellation, and Refund Policy. In some cases, there will be no refund available.

Payment
 
For Fall Semester programs, the following schedule applies:
   
 
In addition to $915 program fee, students studying abroad on the exchange program will be expected to pay on grounds tuition and fees for their school of enrollment.  Example: Tuition of $10,532  per semester for student enrolled in College of Arts and Sciences (2022-2023 tuition)
 
 
Billable Fees* include:
  • UVA Tuition and course instruction in Lyon
  • Participation in on-site Intensive Language & Culture Course (required)
  • Temporary Housing upon arrival
  • Student Support provided by on-site program coordinator
  • Responsabilité civile (third party insurance)
  • Enrollment in the mandatory PRUNE course (3 credits for Fall/Year program, 2 credits for Spring)
  • Monthly group cultural activities (entrances, transport, snacks)
  • Pass Culture and Carte Musee
  • Monthly group gatherings hosted by UVA program on-site coordinator
  • 2 metric tons of carbon for student flights from IAD to LYS with one stop in FRA will be offset in alignment with the Sustainability Plans of the International Studies Office and the University of Virginia
  • Health and Emergency Assistance Insurance through CISI. The ISO will enroll students in the insurance policy for the program dates
 
Note regarding group meals: 
Every effort will be made to accommodate dietary restrictions during group meals; however, all countries have distinct cuisines along with food preparation techniques, and it is not always possible to address specific food concerns and meet needs.   Program participants are responsible for ensuring their needs can be met for their chosen program itinerary.
 
 
Non-Billable, Estimated Expenses:
  • Round-Trip airfare to program destination (estimate based on fares provided online in January 2023, with departure from Dulles International Airport (IAD) arriving in Lyon (LYS) with one stop in Frankfurt (FRA)
  • Permanent housing (4 months of housing in shared apartment)**
  • Most Meals (non-billable meals estimated on average of $27 per day)
  • Personal Expenses: International phone and data plan, laundry, and daily incidentals

  • Other: French Student Visa for US citizens ($295) 
  • Local Transportation in Lyon
 
**If you choose to live with a host family, the monthly fee is approximately 600 euros, dependent on contracted number of meals, which often includes daily breakfast and four to five dinners per week.
 
Non-billable items posted above are estimates and will differ for each individual depending on their personal needs, course requirements, and personal choices.  Fluctuations in international currency will affect total expenditures. 
 
Other Expenses to consider: 
There are possible costs that have not been included in this budget because they may not be applicable to all students, and will differ by individual if applicable.  These may include but are not limited to: 
 
  • Personal travel beyond the scope of the program
  • CIEF Tuition (see brochure note regarding enrollment at the Centre International d’études Française) – Approx. EUR 1,280
  • OFII (French Immigration Timbre Fiscal mandatory for year-long participants)
  • Immunizations for the area of travel
  • Health and Emergency insurance coverage beyond program dates
  • Passport Fees and additional visa fees (subject to change)
 
 
 
Trip Insurance: The ISO recommends that travelers consider trip insurance that can be tapped in the event travel to or from the
education abroad destination is interrupted or in the event itinerary changes become necessary.
 
 *The University of Virginia reserves the right to adjust all program charges, without prior notification, for increases associated with but not limited to, the cost of instruction, foreign exchange rates, and Board of Visitors changes to tuition and fees.
 
In addition, the University of Virginia reserves the right to alter or cancel this education abroad program in the event of an emergency, changes in operating conditions, or under-enrollment.
