Withdrawal & Refund
Students are responsible for study abroad tuition and program fees once they have committed to attending a program. At the time of commitment, students will be subject to the withdrawal, cancellation, and refund policy found here: Withdrawal, Cancellation, and Refund PolicyIn some cases, there will be no refund available.

Payment
 
For Fall Semester programs, the following schedule applies:
   
Billable Fees* include:
  • Tuition for courses described in brochure
  • Orientation meeting upon arrival
  • Housing in single rooms in student residencies; kitchen facilities available. UVA will cover the cost of an $1,100 (per room) security deposit for students, but students are responsible for any damages to the apartments (apartments are assesed at beginning and conclusion of semester)
  • 24/7 studio space at Bailo Rull Arquitectura
  • Classroom space at ETSAB 
  • Airport pick-up and drop-off on arrival and departure dates (for students arriving within designated times)
  • 90-day unlimited trip public transportation pass
  • Cultural activities and entrances, including:
    • 3 Day Trips (Girona, Castelldefels, & Igualada-Manresa – trips subject to change) - with transportation included
    • Entrance fees to Pedralbes Monastery and the Picasso Museum of Barcelona
    • Panoramic guided bus tour of Barcelona
    • 4-Days/3 Nights Excursion to Madrid (students in shared occupancy housing) - with round trip train tickets included 
    • Additional entrances and expiences
  • Some group meals
  • Additional services by Spanish Studies Abroad (SSA):
    • At least 2 meet-ups with local speaking partners for UVA students who choose to participate
    • A Halloween event
    • A cooking class at local market
    • Thanksgiving lunch with other SSA students
  • 1.76 metric tons of carbon for roundtrip student flights from IAD to BCN will be offset in alignment with the Sustainability Plans of the International Studies Office and the University of Virginia
  • Health and Emergency Assistance Insurance through CISIThe ISO will enroll students in the insurance policy. 

 
Note regarding group meals: 
Every effort will be made to accommodate dietary restrictions during group meals; however, all countries have distinct cuisines along with food preparation techniques, and it is not always possible to address specific food concerns and meet needs.   Program participants are responsible for ensuring their needs can be met for their chosen program itinerary.
 
 
Non-Billable, Estimated Expenses:
  • Airfare between home airport and Barcelona
  • Most meals
  • Personal expenses: Internet and data service for your mobile device, laundry, and other daily incidentals
  • Other:
    • Passport and visa fees – US citizens will require a Spanish visa for the duration of stay (over 90 days). The cost of an entry visa is approximately $183. The cost for most non-US citizens is approximately $111. Visa fees and regulations are subject to change. 
  • Course materials
 
Non-billable items posted above are estimates and will differ for everyone depending on their personal needs, course requirements, and personal choices.  Fluctuations in international currency will affect total expenditures. 
  • The estimated airfare listed above is based on fares provided online in January of 2024 with departure from Dulles International Airport (IAD) arriving in Barcelona (BCN). This is an estimate and fares will change with availability and routing. Lower fares are available with connections in Europe. 
  • Estimated cost of non-billable meals is based on a daily average of $18 and assumes participants will utilize provided kitchen facilities
 
Other Considerations: Some possible costs are not included in this budget, may not be applicable to all students, and will differ by individual if applicable. These may include but are not limited to:
 
  • Personal travel beyond the scope of the program
  • Immunizations for the area of travel
  • Passport fees
  • Health and emergency coverage with CISI beyond the program dates
 
Trip Insurance: The ISO recommends that travelers consider trip insurance that can be tapped in the event travel to or from the
education abroad destination is interrupted or in the event itinerary changes become necessary.
 
 *The University of Virginia reserves the right to adjust all program charges, without prior notification, for increases associated with but not limited to, the cost of instruction, foreign exchange rates, and Board of Visitors changes to tuition and fees.
 
In addition, the University of Virginia reserves the right to alter or cancel this education abroad program in the event of an emergency, changes in operating conditions, or under-enrollment.
