Withdrawal & Refund
Students are responsible for study abroad tuition and program fees once they have committed to attending a program. At the time of commitment, students will be subject to the withdrawal, cancellation, and refund policy found here: Withdrawal, Cancellation, and Refund Policy. In some cases, there will be no refund available.

Payment
 
For Summer programs, the following schedule applies:  
Billable Fees* include:
  • Summer session tuition for 07 credits. Summer session tuition and fee details can be found at: Summer Session Tuition and Fees 2024
  • Should students elect to take additional credits, they will be charged the Summer Session tuition rates of:
    • In state tuition: $456 per credit 
    • Out of state tuition: $1,685 per credit
  • Program Fees: Comprehensive fee for summer session
 
Note regarding meals: 
Every effort will be made to accommodate dietary restrictions during group meals and for meals on campus; however, all countries have distinct cuisines along with food preparation techniques, and it is not always possible to address specific food concerns and meet needs.   Program participants are responsible for ensuring their needs can be met for their chosen program itinerary.
 
 
Non-Billable, Estimated Expenses:
  • International Airfare
  • Meals: Meals on travel days and on own 
  • Personal Expenses: International Phone Service, Laundry, and other daily incidentals
  • Local Transportation: Travel to and from Düsseldorf Airport (DUS) and on own during program in Dortmund
  • TU Dortmund Program Fee (Other): EUR 2,200 for the International Summer Program (ISP) - paid by student direclty to TU Dortmund. Fee includes: 
    • Accommodation: in student hostels/dormitories on campus or close to campus. Rooms are either in single apartments or single rooms in shared flats. All dormitories are fully furnished and offer internet access, pillow and duvet. Washing machines and dryers are also at your disposal in the dormitories.
    • Health Insurance: The health insurance­ is valid for the duration of the ISP in all member states of the Schengen area.
    • Semester Ticket (Student Ticket for Public Transport): ISP ­students receive a student ticket with which they can use both public transport and regional transport in North Rhine-Westphalia (no use of InterCity (IC) or InterCity Express trains is included (ICE)). 
    • Cultural Program and Excursions: Excursions and outings are organized so that participants can get to know­ Dortmund and the Ruhr Area better.
    • Dortmund Double & Pick-up Service in Dortmund: ISP participants are brought into contact with a so-called "Dortmund Double" as support. Dortmund Doubles are students of TU Dortmund University who have already gained their own experience abroad or are preparing for a semester abroad.

Non-billable items posted above are estimates and will differ for each individual depending on their personal needs, course requirements, and personal choices.  Fluctuations in international currency will affect total expenditures. 
  • The estimated airfare listed above is based on fares provided online in March of 2024 with departure from Dulles International Airport (IAD), arriving in
    Düsseldorf (DUS) with one conneciton at a European travel hub (Lisbon, Dublin..etc).  This is an estimate and fares will change with availability and routing

Other Considerations: Some possible costs are not included in this budget, may not be applicable to all students, and will differ by individual if applicable. These may include but are not limited to:
 
  • Personal travel beyond the scope of the program,
  • Immunizations for the area of travel
  • Visa fees (non-US citizens are subject to different regulations and fees) – Visa fees and regulations are subject to change
  • Passport fees
  • Health and emergency coverage with CISI beyond the program dates
Trip Insurance: The ISO recommends that travelers consider trip insurance that can be tapped in the event travel to or from theeducation abroad destination is interrupted or in the event itinerary changes become necessary

 *The University of Virginia reserves the right to adjust all program charges, without prior notification, for increases associated with but not limited to, the cost of instruction, foreign exchange rates, and Board of Visitors changes to tuition and fees.
 
In addition, the University of Virginia reserves the right to alter or cancel this education abroad program in the event of an emergency, changes in operating conditions, or under-enrollment.
