London - Study London

Program Overview

An urban adventure awaits you in London, one of the largest and most fascinating cities in Europe. Our program offers you hands-on education in this iconic city—think: Big Ben, Parliament, Buckingham Palace—and all it has to offer.

The goal of our program is to help you explore contemporary London, both physically and culturally. Gain a deeper knowledge of British culture, including the central importance of history to the British. Explore the global impact of Britain on Western culture, including art, literature, and financial and political systems.

Choose from dozens of IES Abroad courses taught by expert local faculty at our Center, as well as a course at one of our prestigious local partner universities—City, University of London or Queen Mary, University of London. Not only are there hundreds of courses and disciplines available through our partner universities, but you also have the chance to make local British and international friends. You may also take one of our unique workshop courses that focus on the production of a piece of creative work.

Visit www.IESabroad.org for complete program details.

Why London?

The Beatles said it best in their hit song "Blackbird": "All your life, you were only waiting for this moment to arise." Now's your time—study abroad in the land of William Shakespeare, the Royal family, Sir Isaac Newton, and Harry Potter. Be inspired by everything around you in London, from the museums and art galleries to Buckingham Palace and Parliament. Even a simple walk around this culturally rich city or a ride on the Tube can inspire you in ways you'd never imagine.

Student Life

We strive to make sure you feel safe, cared for, and at home while you’re away from home. Whether it’s the orientation program that makes you feel prepared, your housing that is well-located and comfortable, the cultural events that make it easy and fun to meet other international and local students, or the field trips and walking tours that take you to places tourists don’t usually see—we’re all about our student service. Learn more about the day-to-day studying abroad on this program. From field trips to housing, it’s all on IES Abroad’s website.

Scholarships & Aid

IES Abroad firmly believes that financial limitations should not prevent a qualified student from participating in an IES Abroad program. That's why we commit $5 million in study abroad scholarships and aid, all offered through one quick and easy application. Check out all of our scholarship options at www.IESabroad.org/aid.

IES London

Standard Program

IES London Program

Founded in 1972, the IES London program features concentrations in British Literature and Theater, International Business, Political Science and International Relations, as well as Area Studies in such fields as Communications, History, Law, Sociology, and Women's Studies.

Four additional program options include:

  • The IES internship program
  • IES tutorials on special topics in various concentrations
  • Creative workshops in the arts taught by IES and partner universities
  • Enrollment in courses in a range of disciplines at British universities.

IES follows the British approach to instruction whereby students are expected to supplement lectures with reading. IES courses are designed to offer students a unique academic experience, combining the traditions of their home campuses with the best of the British university system. A limited number of IES tutorials--an integral part of classic British education--are available each semester in addition to listed courses.

IES London also integrates field study into virtually all courses, focusing on the many opportunities for learning that London presents.

IES London Summer Program

IES London also offers two six-week summer programs:

  • UK Today. Select two courses from a range of offerings in Art History, History, Journalism, Literature and Theater, and Political Science. This program includes course-related field study to historical and cultural sites in and outside of London, and attendance at London theater performances.
  • Internship. This program provides full-time career-oriented placements in business, politics, education and the arts.

Direct Enrollment

The IES Direct Enrollment Program offers students the opportunity to truly integrate into British university life. You can expect a rich and diverse experience, both from the city of London itself as well as in the classroom.

Academically, you will benefit from studying with world-renowned academics-- research and learning facilities are extensive, including privileged access to libraries such as Senate House, the University of London libraries, and others.

Socially, British university culture is vibrant and varied, with clubs and societies that cater to every student from intramural soccer players to Welsh speakers.

Enrolling directly in British institutions through IES gives you the best of both worlds: independence and support. Although you have the independence of being enrolled like any other student in the British system, you have access to all of the services provided by both the British institutions as well as the student services provided by IES.

IES will help you navigate the British system by providing experienced academic advising and support in registration at your specific institution. IES guarantees housing placement, provides orientation, and gives you the opportunity to participate in optional IES field trips and social functions. You also benefit from IES' commitment to students' wellbeing. All students have access to experienced student services staff, who are trained to support the needs of students studying in London. For the student that is prepared to make the leap, there is a whole new world awaiting you.

You must meet each institution's specific requirements, including the requisite minimum GPA (depending on institution, 3.0-3.7 on a 4.0 scale), relevant prerequisites, and Junior or Senior standing. You should select courses in your major or minor and be prepared to provide documentation of relevant prior coursework.

London City

London, characterized by centuries-old traditions, is the ideal place to study abroad. Past and present are ever entwined in this city, and opportunities for experiencing London's unique culture and history are limitless.

You can experience London's energy first-hand through two distinct IES program options:

  1. Enrollment in the standard IES London Program
  2. Direct Enrollment in local British universities through IES
