Program Overview

Our Study in Amsterdam Program takes advantage of the city's unique balance of history and contemporary culture, and lets you structure your studies at the prestigious Universiteit van Amsterdam and at the IES Abroad Center. Several courses include hands-on components to help you explore the city of Amsterdam and its surroundings while learning about the city's past and present.

Amsterdam will be your classroom. With an important place in European history, the city is far from frozen in time--many forward-looking public policies originated here. Study the history of Amsterdam by visiting some of the city's historic spots, including Anne Frank's home and the Rembrandt House.

Explore the city's well-known museums, such as the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum, and the Stedelijk Museum, to find out more about this diverse culture. Welcome to study abroad!

Why Amsterdam?

Known for its liberal views and open-minded attitude, the residents of Amsterdam welcome you to this cozy city. You'll adore the lovely canals and old European charm that make up the enchanting city of Amsterdam. Because the city planning hasn't changed much since the 19th century, you'll appreciate the architecture and historic homes that color the city. And you can't leave without seeing the windmills!

Student Life

We strive to make sure you feel safe, cared for, and at home while you’re away from home. Whether it’s the orientation program that makes you feel prepared, your housing that is well-located and comfortable, the cultural events that make it easy and fun to meet other international and local students, or the field trips and walking tours that take you to places tourists don’t usually see—we’re all about our student service. Learn more about the day-to-day studying abroad on this program. From field trips to housing, it’s all on IES Abroad’s website.

IES Amsterdam Program

The IES Amsterdam program offers students three different study opportunities in Amsterdam:

Students participating in the Universiteit van Amsterdam option can also enhance their intercultural experience through participation in the Field Experience component. Amsterdam and the Netherlands offer unique opportunities for field study in the arts, business, environmental studies, international law, social welfare, and in the media. Students can pursue their individual interests through service learning or field placements.

The IES center is housed in a Universiteit van Amsterdam building on the Prins Hendrikkade, which is within a short walking distance from Central Station. Students have access to university facilities including libraries, computer rooms, student restaurants and canteens as well as memberships in student clubs and sports teams.

City of Amsterdam

Amsterdam is a city of many faces. It is a city of peaceful streets and canals, historic houses and neighborhoods, an exciting, youthful nightlife, and bustling commerce. A business and commercial leader for centuries, Amsterdam is today an important hub of the European Union and the site of corporate headquarters for such international corporations as Phillips, Heineken, Shell, and ABN AMRO.

In the city's museums, you can study the works of Dutch masters such as Rembrandt, Vermeer, and Van Gogh. The Dutch are known for their openness and tolerance which has helped give Amsterdam its reputation as a place for experimentation in the arts, social welfare, environmentalism, and lifestyles.
