Tucked at the foot of the Black Forest, Freiburg is the quintessential southern German town, with its winding streets and historic architecture. It is also home to Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg, consistently rated one of the top universities in Germany. We invite you to study abroad in Freiburg and to immerse yourself in student life and German language in this vibrant university town.

IES Freiburg

IES Freiburg Program

Founded in 1965, the IES Freiburg program offers a selection of IES classes taught in German by German faculty at the IES Center, as well as access to classes at the renowned Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg, located just minutes from the IES Center. The program provides rigorous undergraduate study in German Language, the Social Sciences, the Humanities, Business, and Economics. Semester and full-year options are available.

Each semester, students enroll in a four-credit German language course and four IES area studies courses or the equivalent in university courses for a total of 15-19 semester credits.

Students take a German language placement exam upon arrival and are placed in one of three intensive language groups according to their needs. Students are required to take the intensive German instruction conducted during orientation. An exam at the end of this instruction determines which regular semester German language course a student will enroll in at the IES Center.

Full-year students are not required to take a German language course at IES during their second semester, nor are single-semester students who score particularly high on the post-orientation language exam.

City of Freiburg

Freiburg is a picturesque university and medieval cathedral town with a rich educational heritage. Now a modern, cosmopolitan city of 200,000 people, Freiburg's skyline is still dominated by the famous gothic Münster (cathedral). Small streams (Bächle) dating from the Middle Ages still flow along the narrow streets in the city center. Small enough that almost everything is within easy walking or biking distance, Freiburg is large enough to offer a rich cultural life of its own.

Located on the edge of the scenic Black Forest, an hour away from towering mountains, Freiburg is a year-round sports center. Close to France and Switzerland and to many interesting regions of Germany, Freiburg offers an ideal jumping off point for exploring Europe.
