Vienna - European Society & Culture

Program Overview

Offering both English- and German-taught courses, the IES Abroad Vienna European Society & Culture program allows you to study the culture, history, business, and politics of a region that continues to play a major role on the world stage.

Open to students at all language levels, our program brings more than 60 years of experience to a variety of unique courses taught by faculty from top European institutions.

With sufficient background in German, you can also enroll in courses at the prestigious Universität Wien, where you experience the Austrian education system and have the option to participate in student activities. Maybe you'll even make some Austrian friends while you're at it.

Visit www.IESabroad.org for complete program details.

Why Vienna?

We'd like to let you in on a little secret: Vienna is extraordinary. Quickly—gather your things and study there before more students realize what a hidden gem it is. Consistently rated one of the top cities in the world to live in, come see for yourself why the music, culture, and history of this world-class city elicit nothing but adoration from those who go there.

Student Life

We strive to make sure you feel safe, cared for, and at home while you’re away from home. Whether it’s the orientation program that makes you feel prepared, your housing that is well-located and comfortable, the cultural events that make it easy and fun to meet other international and local students, or the field trips and walking tours that take you to places tourists don’t usually see—we’re all about our student service. Learn more about the day-to-day studying abroad on this program. From field trips to housing, it’s all on IES Abroad’s website.

IES Vienna

IES Vienna Program

Founded in 1950, IES Vienna offers a rigorous academic program, with concentrations in Music and European studies. Boasting one of the most extensive curricula of any study abroad program, IES Vienna usually enrolls 100 to 120 students a semester. In addition, the IES Vienna Center organizes field trips and cultural activities, facilitates enrollment in local university courses, arranges housing and arranges the opportunity to participate in IES Intercenter Events.

Each semester, students normally enroll in a 4 credit German language course (geared to their language ability) and four other courses for a total of 16 credits. Any combination of IES courses, local university courses, and an internship (depending on eligibility) counts towards this total. The distinguished IES faculty is drawn from Austrian institutions of higher learning and top universities in Central and Eastern Europe.

IES Vienna Music Program
Specially designed for music performance majors, instrumentalists and vocalists, the IES Vienna Music Program offers music history, music theory, and performance studies. Only students admitted to the Music Performance Workshop may enroll for performance studies. Students submit a workshop application with their IES application form and have an interview and audition onsite.

Music Performance Workshop students are eligible to receive individual technical training if their home school authorizes it and their major requires it. IES partially subsidizes such instruction. Students are also encouraged to audition for a variety of orchestral and choral groups in Vienna.

For students not accepted into the Music Performance Workshop, IES can also help arrange private music lessons at an additional cost.

The IES Center offers five practice rooms at the Palais Corbelli. Two off-campus facilities provide six more practice rooms--each equipped with a piano--and a lounge.

IES Vienna Summer Program

IES Vienna Summer Music Program
Designed for music performance majors and music history majors, this six-week IES Vienna Summer Music Program offers music history on the featured topic or period, performance studies, and German language study at beginning and intermediate levels. Students may opt to enroll in any two or all three of the program components. Language study is required for students with less than one year of college-level German study. The distinguished IES faculty is drawn primarily from the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna and the University of Vienna.

City of Vienna

Vienna is a thoroughly modern city where the past and future of Europe converge. From its colorful history, Vienna has adopted the best of the new and still preserve its culture and history. The waltz and Mozart are still very much alive in this city where film, music, the opera and museums draw hip and sophisticated crowds. The Viennese elevated the coffee house to a cultural institution in Europe and still sets the standard. Friends spend hours in the coffee houses, discussing ideas and enjoying pastries first served at the imperial court.
