IES Milan

IES Milan Program
IES Milan Summer Program

IES Milan offers two programs for semester and full-year students:

  • Beginning/Intermediate Italian Program: This program approaches immersion in the Italian language for students with little or no previous Italian language study who want to learn the language as quickly as possible, as well as for those with some prior Italian language study who want to increase their proficiency. Students in this program take a six-credit language course and select from IES area studies courses taught in English by Italian professors. Topics include Art History, History, Literature, Music, Theater, and Political Science.
  • Advanced Italian Program: Designed for students who have already completed intermediate level language study and who want to experience an Italian educational environment. Students in this program enroll in four credits of Italian language and select from IES area studies courses taught in Italian by Italian university faculty.

Note that final placement is determined by an on-site language proficiency exam.

Eligible students are encouraged to combine their IES coursework with one or two local university courses. Through a combination of IES courses, university courses, and internships, students take between 15 and 19 credit hours per semester.

The IES Milan Center is located at the Università Cattolica, across the street from the historical cloisters of its medieval Church of St. Ambrose. The IES Milan Center contains staff offices, classrooms, a student lounge, a music practice room, a library/multimedia room, and other amenities.

The Università Cattolica campus is an ancient and beautiful facility offering students many amenities including one of Italy's largest and most important libraries, computer labs, study rooms, student health center, travel agency, cultural and sports opportunities, and an inexpensive student cafeteria serving full meals for lunch and dinner.

IES Milan Music Program
The IES Milan music program provides a full range of music opportunities for instrumentalists, vocalists, composers, and music performance majors. In addition to offering a music history course and music performance workshop each semester, IES works closely with the Accademia Internazionale della Musica (the largest private music school in Italy).

City of Milan

Once a capital of the Roman Empire, Milan today is the commercial and financial center of contemporary Italy. In the Piazza Duomo, the heart of Milan, the architecture of past centuries blends with the neon lights of a modern metropolis. Here Leonardo da Vinci painted "The Last Supper," and Verdi and Puccini composed music that is still performed at Milan's opera house, La Scala.

Milan is now a center for business, the fashion industry, and domestic and industrial design. As the only American program in Milan, IES offers students the opportunity to integrate fully into the life of this modern Italian city through living, studying, and interacting daily with the local population and university students. Milan's central location provides students easy access to all major Italian as well as European cities.
