About the Program

Our French Language Immersion & Area Studies Program has two important goals: to improve your written and verbal proficiency in French, and to turn you into an authentic Nantais·e! Our academic program and varied course offering will introduce you to the city's history and actions toward societal change, while our social and cultural program and activities, led by local student tutors, will enable you to take advantage of what Nantes has to offer. Thanks to our close relationships with our partner universities, you can take classes alongside local students--and even student-athletes can study abroad without worrying about missing training or competitions.

This application is for UVA students applying for approval to participate in an IES Nantes study abroad programs and summer internship programs.

IES Nantes

"Nantes is perhaps the only city other than Paris where I have the impression that something great may happen to me," wrote the French poet, Andr? Breton. After only a few weeks in Nantes, IES students begin to realize that "great things" await them as well.

IES Nantes Program

Founded in 1965, the program enrollment is small enough to welcome students into the community, yet large enough to allow for a variety of academic and extracurricular activities. Due to the low number of English speakers in Nantes, IES offers students the opportunity to integrate fully into French society and function completely in French .

The IES Center occupies two floors of a 19th century residential building located a few blocks from the historic center of Nantes. The IES Nantes program enjoys a close relationship with the Universit? de Nantes. Students have many opportunities for interaction with faculty and can join in local student activities.

The IES Nantes program has two important goals:

Improve students' written and verbal proficiency in French through language and area studies courses and internships
Introduce students to contemporary France and its role in the European Union

IES courses are taught in French by native French faculty, many of whom are full professors at the Universit? de Nantes.

Students select from IES language courses in grammar, conversation, and phonetics, and from area studies courses in Art History, Economics, History, Literature, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology, and Theater. Through a combination of IES courses, university courses, and internships, students take between 15 and 19 credit hours per semester. Credits at the Universit? de Nantes vary from two to four credits per course depending upon the number of contact hours.

City of Nantes

Once a vital port city in the 18th century, Nantes is now the sixth largest city in France with a population of over 500,000 people and a leader in technology and international industries. It was recently ranked one of the best cities in France for quality of life. Situated at the mouth of the Loire River just 30 miles from the Atlantic Ocean, Nantes is only two hours by train from Paris and allows quick journeys to the capital and easy access to other destinations in Europe.

Rich in tradition, yet unspoiled by tourism, Nantes offers a quintessential image of French society. More importantly, IES is the only permanent American study abroad program in Nantes. As English is rarely heard in the streets, students have ample opportunity to practice their French.
