Paris - French Studies

Program Overview

With its grand boulevards, world-famous monuments, and iconic skyline (think: the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame, and Sacré Coeur!), it will be difficult to leave this charmingly romantic city. Along with its many historic world-renowned museums, art flourishes in Paris in the form of public gardens, sidewalk cafés, and outdoor markets, fragrant with fresh fruit and pastries.

This program combines rigorous study of the French language with a broad range of classes taught in French by accomplished faculty. You can also experience what life is like for French students by taking one or more courses at a local French university. Tutoring is available if you need help with the transition to higher education in France.

Visit www.IESabroad.org for complete program details.

Why Paris?

You know what it's like to fall in love—but Paris won't break your heart. You'll want to spend all of your time admiring cultural icons like the Eiffel Tower. You'll get lost in the city's exquisite art scene. You'll want to savor the decadent French cuisine at local restaurants. You'll take long walks along the River Seine and wander aimlessly through the city streets for hours. All in the name of love. Je t'aime, Paris!

Student Life

We strive to make sure you feel safe, cared for, and at home while you’re away from home. Whether it’s the orientation program that makes you feel prepared, your housing that is well-located and comfortable, the cultural events that make it easy and fun to meet other international and local students, or the field trips and walking tours that take you to places tourists don’t usually see—we’re all about our student service. Learn more about the day-to-day studying abroad on this program. From field trips to housing, it’s all on IES Abroad’s website.

IES Paris

IES Paris Program
IES Paris Summer Program

Founded in 1962, the IES Paris program combines a rigorous curriculum of French language study with impressive IES and university course offerings in the Humanities, Economics, and the Social Sciences, with emphasis on the Francophone world. Internship and field study opportunities round out the program.

IES courses are taught exclusively in French by native French-speaking faculty. Courses in grammar, phonetics, and translation develop your ability to communicate effectively in French.

IES area studies courses in Art History, Business, Cinema, Economics, History, Literature, Political Science, Sociology and Theater cover subjects of both historic and contemporary interest. Field study activities take you outside the classroom to learn from the rich environment that composes daily Parisian life.

IES also offers a unique opportunity to focus on issues of the Francophone world by providing courses on Art, Cinema, Francophone History, Gender, and Literature. Field study is an important component of these courses and includes visits to relevant museums, cultural institutions, and various ethnically diverse neighborhoods in Paris. If you enroll in these courses, we encourage you to participate in at least one of the optional IES subsidized field trips to Provence or Andalusia.

Students register for a minimum of 15 credit hours each semester (maximum of 19), selecting from IES courses, university courses, and the internship seminar.

City of Paris

Paris delights and inspires newcomers with the paintings in the Louvre, the grands boulevards, and a skyline marked by the Eiffel Tower and the Gothic spires of Notre Dame. The Parisians are also very proud of their rich cultural life, with over 300 theaters, 400 cinemas and many concert halls. The rich traditions of Paris and its environment afford ample opportunities for students to enhance their classroom experience by visiting local museums, attending plays and concerts, and touring one of the many ethnically diverse neighborhoods of Paris.

The IES Paris Center is located on rue Daguerre, one of the city's oldest market streets near the Montparnasse train station and within walking distance of the Latin Quarter. The neighborhood surrounding the Center is a lively residential area, bustling with cafés, restaurants, theaters, and shops. IES Paris is committed to encouraging students' integration into the French community and to developing their understanding of the French language and people.
