Established in 1911, the University of Hong Kong is the territory's oldest institute of higher learning. Bring home a beautiful memory of Hong Kong from the Jade Market. Located in Yau Ma Tei, the Jade Market features 450 stalls selling all types, shapes, sizes and prices; open daily from 10am - 3:30pm. No matter what you choose, Hong Kong is an experience you will never forget.

Academics

Curriculum
The medium of teaching at HKU is English, and you can learn Mandarin or Cantonese according to your own level. Course information can be found here. A course at HKU usually has 6 credits, so a full load is 30 credits for one semester. With a full load of 30 credits, more than half of them must come from the same faculty (i.e. Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Business and Economics).

Accommodation

The University has approximately 4,000 places in 13 residence halls. Exchange students can apply for residential halls once the University admits them. Undergraduate students fill most places in halls of residence. Each hall also admits a small proportion of postgraduate students and reserves a small number of places for non-Hong Kong students (basically undergraduate, exchange and visiting students). Residence hall placement is very competitive, so the University cannot therefore guarantee to provide hall accommodation to every non-local student, but would try its best to find suitable accommodation for him or her.

Halls of HKU are known for their strong hall spirit. Members identify very strongly with their hall. Each hall has its own tradition, culture, and unique characteristics. Through developing a sense of belonging and commitment to the hall, members will also develop a similar sense of commitment to the society.

Halls of residence vary considerably in size and character. All halls have common rooms and recreational facilities as well as quiet places for study.

Cost

UVA students will pay their regular tuition rate and fees to UVA for the term they are on a UVA Exchange Program. Students are additionally responsible for room and board, transportation, and personal expenses. Students will pay the host institution or make their own arrangements for accommodations. Check the host institution web site for accommodation choices, cost, and application procedures.

Students are responsible for booking and paying for their own international airfare as well as researching and obtaining the necessary visa.

UVA students are required to purchase CISI emergency medical and accident insurance.

Passport and Visa

All participants will need a valid passport in order to participate in the program. Students must ensure that their passport is valid at least six months past the program return date. US passport holders will need a visa to participate in this program. International students should meet with their International Student Advisor and Education Abroad Advisor in the International Studies Office as part of the application process.
