European Union

Program Overview

As the European Union continues to grow in size and influence, understanding it becomes key to understanding Europe and our world. Come and learn about the economic, political, social, and cultural issues that confront the European Union today.

Taught in English, the IES Abroad European Union Program gives you the chance to study Politics, Economics, Business, and International Relations like you never have before.

The program features an integrative seminar that incorporates approximately 21 days of field study to travel to numerous countries inside and outside of the EU. As you visit each new country, you develop your understanding of the European Union, its history, and its institutions.

Visit www.IESabroad.org for complete program details.

Why the European Union?

The European Union is not only an important political and economic institution, but a community of nearly 500 million citizens and one of the largest markets in the world. As the European Union continues to grow in size and influence, understanding the EU and the countries seeking membership, becomes key to understanding Europe and our world. With its central European location, the picturesque city of Freiburg makes an ideal starting point for the exploration of the European Union.

We strive to make sure you feel safe, cared for, and at home while you’re away from home. IES European Union

IES European Union Semester Program
IES European Union Summer Program

Founded in 1981, the single-semester IES European Union program offers outstanding learning opportunities for economics, political science, international relations, and international business majors. Study the development and activities of the EU in a breathtaking location, with field trips to sites important to the affairs and interests of the European Union and its plans for the future. Courses emphasize the historical and institutional development of the EU, its internal policies, and its relations with outside nations.

A major component of the EU program is field study. Because of its prime location in the center of Europe, Freiburg affords easy access to the major EU offices of governance as well as to the capitals of numerous newly-accepted EU states.

All EU courses are held at the IES EU Program Center in the center of Freiburg. EU program courses are taught in English by German faculty. All students enroll in one German language course, a mandatory integrative seminar, and three other IES courses for a total of 16 credits per semester. The mandatory seminar provides the context for course work and field study. It examines the EU in all of its aspects and not just from the viewpoint of a single discipline.

To complete your schedule, you may concentrate in a single discipline or select a combination of other IES courses in Political Science, Economics, and Business. With the approval of your home school, you may take an additional EU course in lieu of the German language course if you demonstrate advanced-level German proficiency.
