Program Description:
Petition Header

The UVA International Studies Office (ISO) maintains a list of approved study abroad programs that you can explore via our program search. If you are not able to find a pre-approved program that is a fit for your academic and personal goals, you may petition for approval to participate in an alternate program option.

If you determine that a petition is the right option for you, consider the following:
  • Does the program offer a comprehensive website? You should be able to access a thorough program overview, host city/country information, staff contacts, current information on travel dates and costs, application submission instructions, course descriptions and alumni feedback.
  • Does the program offer pre-departure services? These may include responsive and accessible staff, advising services, visa assistance (if applicable) and comprehensive orientation materials.
  • Does the program offer in-country services? These may include on-site staff to provide airport pick-up (or assistance) and housing placement, as well as 24/7 emergency and day-to-day support.
  • Does the program adhere to best practices in the field of education abroad? Look for programs affiliated with NAFSA: Association of International Educators and/or the Forum on Education Abroad.
  • Is the program offered through at third party provider or will you be enrolling directly at a foreign institution? Third party program providers facilitate applications and logistics for you. If you are applying directly to your host university, you will be responsible for understanding the admissions and enrollment requirements at the institution.
  • Does the program provide you with an official transcript issued by an accredited institution of higher education? In order to receive credit at UVA, you must submit an official transcript issued by an accredited university in the U.S. or abroad. Consult your Education Abroad Advisor if you have questions about transcripts.
The petition application requires you to submit information about your program’s academics and student support services. You must also explain why this program is the best match for your academic, personal and professional goals.

Petition Procedures

  • You are required to meet with an Education Abroad Advisor and are strongly encouraged to meet with your Academic Advisor, Director of Undergraduate Programs, and/or Dean to discuss academic goals; review the listing of approved programs; and gauge the viability of your proposed alternate program.
  • Submit the petition application by the deadline posted on the top of this webpage. Note that your program’s deadline may be earlier.
  • Completed petitions are reviewed by the ISO on a rolling basis, and are approved on a case-by-case basis. Your advisor may require you to submit additional information in order to review or approve your petition.
  • You will be notified when your petition has been approved.
  • If approved, you will also be responsible for applying directly to the program and completing the ISO’s pre-departure process online.

Expected Expenses

Tuition and Fees: You will pay the program’s tuition and fees directly to the program sponsor. Program tuition and fees are found on the program or university’s website or brochure. You will also be charged a $500 Study Abroad Administrative fee, which is posted to SIS once you have committed to participating in a non-UVA study abroad program.
Housing and MealsYou are responsible for paying for accommodation and any required or preferred meal plan. You will pay the program or university or make your own arrangements for accommodations. Check the program web site for accommodation and meal plan choices, cost, and application procedures.
Travel and Travel Documents: For many programs, you are responsible for booking and paying for your own international airfare as well as researching and obtaining the necessary visa. Check the program website for details. You should also budget for in-country transportation costs.
Insurance: UVA students are required to purchase CISI emergency medical and accident insurance. Students participating in certain programs are exempt from this requirement. More information can be found on the Insurance page.
Additional Expenses: You should be prepared to purchase required books and supplies. You should also budget for additional personal expenses; examples include laundry, phone costs, personal travel, meals out, etc.
