“Comparative Health Care Systems” examines the structure of health care systems in different countries focusing on financing, reimbursement and delivery systems, as well as their effects on cost, quality, efficiency and equity of health care services. Social, ethical, cultural and political issues that affect the delivery of health care services are critically analyzed. Roles of health care providers, consumers of health care services, and private/public interests within different health care systems are examined. We will examine health system models and health outcomes worldwide, as well as investigate Spain's approach to healthcare, ranked 7th in the world, through visits to local health organizations and health care sites.
Through living with a host family, the Spanish language course, and cultural activities and trips offered during the semester students will improve their fluency in Spanish and get to experience firsthand the vibrant culture of Spain.
Valencia is the third largest city in Spain, with a population of around 800,000. Located on the Mediterranean Coast and surrounded by immense beaches, it gracefully mixes old and new, with modern public services, business establishments and leisure attractions, set against a backdrop of historically important civic and religious buildings, monuments and museums. Valencia is well located with respect to other interesting cities in Spain as well as continental Europe. With its own airport, much of Europe is accessible.

Spanish prerequisite: Completed SPAN 2010 (Intermediate Spanish) or the equivalent
Along with "Comparative Healthcare Systems" students will enroll in a Spanish language class:

- SPAN 3050-Spanish for Medical Professionals

Valencia Summer Courses
Accommodation and Meals
UVA in Valencia premises are located in the University District of Valencia and offer spacious well-equipped classrooms, a computer room, and a lounge. The program has a full support staff.
Students are housed in home stays with full board, hosted by families with a long-standing relationship with the program. Students will be provided three meals a day and their laundry will be done once a week.
Workshops, concerts, theater, movies, museums, music, sports, day trips, weekend trips, and more. Live Spain and its language to the fullest!

Passport and Visa
All participants will need a valid passport in order to participate in the program. Students must ensure that their passport is valid at least six months past the program return date. US passport holders will not need a visa to participate in this program. International students should meet with their International Student Advisor and Education Abroad Advisor in the International Studies Office as part of the application process.
