Key Dates

If accepted to this studio, you must commit to the program (by clicking the Commit button) and submit passport information by 11:59pm on Thursday, August 10, with additional supplemental materials due Tuesday, August 15. Students will depart the US on September 21 and arrive back in the US September 29 on a group flight.

Travel & Accommodations

Based in New Delhi with an overnight in Agra, students will stay in shared rooms in hotels. A group flight is being arranged for participants.

Eligibility & Selection

The semester-long course is open to students of 4th year Architecture (undergraduate) and 2nd/3rd year Architecture/Landscape Arch/Urban Planning-Urban Design Certificate (graduate). Students who are placed in this studio will travel to India per the dates listed. Participation in the travel component is mandatory and is contingent upon receiving disciplinary clearance and meeting eligibility requirements for education abroad. Students are also required to confirm commitment to travel and cover required expenses, and complete required materials and other pre-travel preparations. Instructions will be sent to students once placed in the studio in August.

Cost & Financial Aid

The program cost and payment schedule is available under the Budget Sheets link at the top of this page. Significant funding is offsetting the cost of participation, however there will still be some cost to you. Committing to the program confirms your financial responsibility for billable costs outlined in the Budget Sheet. Note that the funding cannot be applied if you do not actually participate in the travel. Therefore, students who withdraw after committing to the program, or are otherwise unable to travel, may actually owe more than if they participate. See the Budget Sheet Notes for details. Students interested in pursuing financial aid for the cost to them should contact Student Financial Services directly. Note that any financial aid review/processing may not be complete before the billable fees are due.

Passport & Visa Information

All participants will need a valid passport in order to travel. You must be in possession of a valid passport by August 10. Students must ensure that their passport is valid at least six months past the return date. Students traveling on a US passport WILL require a visa to participate in this program; the ISO will provide instructions for applying. Students traveling on a non-US passport should begin researching visa requirements (and processing time) immediately if interested in this studio. If you do not see your country listed as being eligible for the e-Tourist Visa on this website, contact the Education Abroad Advisor listed above immediately. You will be responsible for confirming whether you are able to secure a visa in time through the Consulate's identified process. International students also should meet with their International Student Advisor in the ISO.
Note: The following students should consider alternate studios :
  • Chinese passport-holders (tourist visas cannot be issued to Chinese nationals at this time)
  • Pakistani passport holders OR heritage/origin (visa processing will be prohibitively lengthy)

Traveler Health

All students considering Education Abroad should consult the Students Abroad section of the U.S. Department of State’s web-based travel resources and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Traveler’s Health web resources to research health, safety, and security conditions; visa requirements; immunization requirements; and recommendations on staying healthy and safe in their target destination(s). Students should also carefully review the UVA Education Abroad Health & Safety Abroad web page. Parents and guardians are strongly advised to review all of these resources, as well. UVA students and visiting students enrolled in UVA Education Abroad programs are subject to the University of Virginia’s Policy on Student International Travel

Travel Clinic

For travel to medium to high medical risk destinations, including India, students are strongly encouraged to make and attend a travel appointment at the International Travel Clinic at Student Health & Wellness at least one month in advance of departure. The Student Health Travel Clinic offers specific vaccinations for travel which may not be available at most doctors' offices.  All travel vaccines given at the Student Health clinic are covered in full for students with Aetna Student Health Insurance. Care providers provide travel counseling regarding food and water borne illnesses, insect borne diseases, traveler's diarrhea prevention and treatment, malaria prophylaxis, and rabies risk. The clinic is coordinated by health care providers Certified in Travel Health.
