Technology is changing faster and faster, and university students need critical skills and experiences just to keep up. In response to the rapidly changing career-landscape, UVA has formed an exciting collaboration with iXperience – a top international study abroad school – to pioneer an intense 6-week career-acceleration program for ambitious students who wish to learn industry-relevant skills, and boost their CVs with an impactful internship, all while exploring the spunky, historic city of Berlin.

Often termed Europe’s start-up powerhouse, Berlin attracts an eclectic mix of entrepreneurs and futurists who have innovated in the finance, tech, and biotech spaces in particular. This means that we’re able to offer students exciting internships with top-tier, as well as up-and-coming companies.

Safe, well-connected, trendy and comfortable; quality of living in Berlin is superb. Cafe culture abounds, with a thriving art and incredible street music scene young and old enjoy.

Berlin is also a cultural dream, with an abundance of museums and galleries (many of which are free for students) showcasing Germany’s complex past, and vibrant present. Buildings, both old and futuristic, coexist in an energetic collision that births innovation.

GSGS 3510: Living & Working Abroad

6 credits

iX is no vacation. You'll hit the ground running with high-intensity classes that push you to learn faster than you thought possible. Our courses blend foundation theory with practical skills, so you'll be learning things you can actually use—not just cram for the test. The good news: you'll be surrounded by like-minded students who are just as hungry to learn and grow as you are. Choose from:

First week
The program begins with a focus on Berlin. Take classes about the city's history, culture, and current events to understand your context. Explore your surroundings through iX-sponsored excursions.

Weeks 2-3
Start building your skill set—quickly. Collaborative, workshop-style courses, taught by industry experts, will push you to learn faster than you thought possible. Finish up with an impressive porfolio of class projects, and get ready for your internship.

Last three weeks
Go beyond the classroom with a guaranteed internship. Work with a company abroad to apply your gained classroom knowledge in an professional environment. Finish up with a clear deliverable to show future employers.

Orientation

Health and safety are top priorities for iXperience and UVA. iXperience provides comprehensive briefings upon arrival, supplemented with digital guides with local knowledge of the environment. Walking tours of the surrounding areas are also provided.

Proactive inspections of all facilities during the program preparation phase are routine, with relevant expertise on standby for any emergencies. iXperience has a comprehensive and detailed Crisis Management Plan to cover any eventuality. If required, Germany's private medical treatment facilities are renowned for being world-class and affordable.

Accommodation and MealsAccommodation and Meals

The iX Berlin Village is located in one of the safest and trendiest areas of the city. Students will share a room with up to two fellow attendees of the same gender.

Meals are not provided, but there are fantastic restaurants and cafe´s in all directions, within walking distance from campus and the accommodation. Basic kitchen facilities are also available, should students wish to prepare their own meals.

 

Excursions IconExcursions

Weekend excursions are included in the program fee. Past excursions have included cultural immersion tours, and historic site explorations. These excursions are structured to help students unlock personal growth, often by pushing them out of their comfort zones. Immersing students in the cultural and historic wonders of Berlin, the excursions iXperience designs are ideal opportunities to foster human connection with fellow learners, and locals alike.

Cost and Financial Aid

Program costs are listed on the iXperience website. Students with identifiable financial need are encouraged to apply for scholarships and financial aid. Additionally, iXperience will be awarding need-based scholarships to select UVA students. To be considered, you must: be a student in the College of Arts & Sciences, be accepted by iXperience and approved by UVA, and have your FAFSA and CSS Profile on file with SFS.

Passport IconPassport and Visa

All participants will need a valid passport in order to participate in the program. Students must ensure that their passport is valid at least six months past the program return date. US passport-holders do not need a visa for this program. International students may need a visa, and should also meet with their International Student Advisor in the International Studies Office for information about re-entering the U.S. at the conclusion of the program.

All students considering Education Abroad should consult the Students Abroad section of the U.S. Department of State’s web-based travel resources and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Traveler’s Health web resources to research health, safety, and security conditions; visa requirements; immunization requirements; and recommendations on staying healthy and safe in their target destination(s). Students should also carefully review the UVA Education Abroad Health & Safety Abroad web page. Parents and guardians are strongly advised to review all of these resources, as well. UVA students and visiting students enrolled in UVA Education Abroad programs are subject to the University of Virginia’s Policy on Student International Travel.
