Program Description:
Killam logoThe University of Virginia is a Killam Fellowship University Partner. Students interested in studying abroad on exchange in Canada should strongly consider applying to this program. The Killam Fellowship Program offers a cash award of $12,000 US ($6,000 US per semester), coverage of a health benefit plan, orientations at the start of each semester, and the opportunity to apply for a mobility grant for up to $800 to support an educational field trip during the semester or year abroad.

Application


There is only one application cycle each year which means students interested in applying for a Spring semester program must plan ahead and apply a year in advance. I.e. Apply by January 10, 2024 for study abroad in Fall 2024, Spring 2025, and Academic Year 2024-2025
  • Note: Contact Emily Graber (eg9cx@virginia.edu) if you plan to apply for the Spring 2025 term and do not see it listed as a term option above. 

Application Phase 1: Students must complete two applications by January 10:
  • the Killam Fellowship Direct Exchange application available on the Killam Fellowship Program website 
  • the application on this page (click "Apply Now" above to get started) 
Application Phase 2: If accepted to the Killam Fellowship, you will then complete the following applications within 10-days of acceptance to the Fellowship:
  • a full UVA Education Abroad application through the Education Abroad Website, and 
  • an exchange application for your host institution

Eligibility 


In addition to meeting UVA's eligibility requirements for participating in education abroad, you must also meet the eligibility requirements for the Killam Fellowship. Students who do not meet the Killam Fellowship's eligibility requirements may still be able to study abroad in Canada on one of the UVA exchange programs. 

Language requirements: Some host institutions may require proficiency in French. If you plan to list one of these universities, ensure you meet the French language requirements before you apply. You can find language requirements on the host university website.
